How to Build Meaningful Connections in College
Welcome back to my weekly newsletter for college students!
Last week, I talked about the importance of building a community and shared some tips on how to do it effectively. Today, I’m going to dive deeper into one of the most important aspects of building a community: Networking!
As a college student, networking may not be at the top of your priority list, but it should be. Building connections with your peers, professors, and industry professionals can be incredibly valuable, both personally and professionally.
Here are some tips on how to build meaningful connections in college:
Attend events and join clubs: College is a great place to meet new people and expand your network. Attend events on campus and join clubs that interest you. You can join Think-Digital, which conducts events you’ll really enjoy. This will give you the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passions.
Utilize social media: Social media platforms like LinkedIn can be incredibly useful for building your professional network. You don’t have to create and engage every day, but connect with professionals in your field, share your work and accomplishments, and engage with others in your industry.
Build relationships with your professors: Your professors can be a valuable resource for advice, mentorship, and professional connections. Take the time to get to know them and build a relationship with them. Who knows, your lack of attendance could be adjusted and helped, if you’re having a good rapport with your subject professors.
Be proactive: Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Reach out to people you admire and respect, ask for advice and mentorship, and be willing to offer help in return. Being proactive doesn’t mean just to grab the opportunity, but also to give something first before you get.
Networking is about building relationships, not just collecting contacts.
Take the time to get to know people and build a genuine connection with them.
