Advice for Computer based Department Students
Welcome to the world of Computer Science and Information Technology!
As you begin your journey in any college, I want to share some insights and advice that I’ve learned throughout my career as a Software Engineer at FSS and a Big Data Support Engineer at Cloudera.
First and foremost, don’t be afraid to try new things and make mistakes. The IT industry is constantly evolving, and even the senior leads in your team are prone to make mistakes. Your advantage over those senior people is, you can make mistakes without being escalated. There are endless opportunities for innovation and creativity for you. Embrace challenges and be willing to learn from your mistakes.
It’s also important to build a strong foundation of technical skills and knowledge. Make the most of your coursework and seek out extracurricular activities that align with your interests and career goals. Join a coding club, attend hackathons, and participate in industry events to gain practical experience and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies.
Networking is also a crucial aspect of the IT industry. Attend career fairs, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and seek out mentorship opportunities. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance from those who have more experience than you.
Last, but not least, remember to prioritize your well-being. The IT industry can be fast-paced and demanding, but it’s important to take breaks and make time for self-care. Practice mindfulness, and maintain a healthy work-life balance to avoid burnout.
As you onboard on your journey in the CS or IT industry, I hope these insights and advice serve as a helpful guide. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come your way, and remember to prioritize your growth and well-being along the way.
